In addition to requiring the installation of new infrastructure, urban growth increases demand on existing infrastructure. In many cases older systems are inadequate and may need to be upgraded. Also, expanding communities encroach on facilities that were once well away from population centres. These challenges can be addressed through the use of trenchless technologies to upgrade existing facilities. Technologies such as microtunneling and HDD for new construction and sliplining, pipe bursting, relining for repair and upgrading of existing infrastructure can be applied to meet the needs of growing populations.
Trenchless replacement of existing crossings has several advantages including less surface disruption and the ability to go around obstacles that may not have existed when the original facility was installed. Entec has designed numerous line replacements including installing pipelines directly below operating pipelines. Aging, inadequate or at-risk infrastructure can be replaced or upgraded with a minimum of impact to the surroundings.
